10 Shows You Need to Binge Before Summer Ends

Hey guys, how’s it going? Idk about you, but I’ve just been chillin, pretending that it’s not August, that school doesn’t start this month, and that I don’t have to go back to dating long distance soon : – ) Quite a lot to be in denial about, I know, but it’s okay. I always have something to distract me, and that is TV.

Now I am not a “TV person” by any means… I enjoy things like shopping and going out to eat more, and I literally could not even tell you what’s on regular TV bc I only watch streaming services. BUT, when it comes to said streaming services (Netflix & Hulu)… I am alllll about them. There’s just something about having a million shows at your fingertips that is so exciting! And once you get hooked on a show, being able to keep up with the characters and the storyline so closely (instead of waiting a whole week for a new episode) is so comforting. I just love it so much, and therefore have watched multiple seasons of multiple shows. Everyone knows this about me, at least all my friends and family do, and yet they were still shocked at how fast I finished The Mindy Project. People don’t get it. I’ve even said the sentence “I’m just really good at Netflix” out loud. I seriously love it. And it’s not like I waste my entire life away doing this either, bc A) I’m really good at multitasking and B) it’s not wasteful.

SO. With all of that being said, and only a little under 3 weeks left until school starts, I wanted to make a little list of the best shows around for y’all, so that you can pick one (or five) and get to binging before we’re back to hitting the books. Or, if you’re me, “hitting the books,” AKA doing homework in one tab with Netflix on in the other. The following ten shows are (IMO) the best to binge this summer, ranked in no specific order!!

1. Riverdale – Netflix

I’m sure no one is surprised to see this show make the list, as it’s been the talk of the town since it came out on the CW in January, and hit Netflix back in May. This show is actually based on the Archie comics (which I literally did not know at first lol) and it’s incredible. Very well made. It’s about the mysterious death of a high school student in the small town of  Riverdale. The show focuses on the aftermath and all of the people who are involved and affected by this tragic incident. Puzzle pieces are put together, and more information is revealed, episode by episode, for 13 “Chapters”. It’s easy to watch, easy to binge, and deliciously interesting! The actors are all incredible, some new, some old (Cole Sprouse, anyone?) and again, it’s so WELL PRODUCED! Give this one a chance, and you won’t regret it.

Total Episodes: 13 (45 min each)

2. Gossip Girl – Netflix

This one is a classic. I couldn’t not put it on the list. You probably have already seen it, but if you haven’t or haven’t re-watched it in a while, then it’s time to start it! This show is PERFECT for a summertime indulgence, as you can focus all of your time and energy on envying the lives of these notorious Upper East Siders, and taking notes so that you can return to school channeling your inner Serena Van Der Woodsen. There are literally too many good things I could say about this show, so I’ll let the Netflix description do it for me. “Rich, unreasonably attractive private school students do horrible, scandalous things to one another. Repeatedly.” Who wouldn’t want to watch that? With main stars like Blake Lively, Penn Badgley, and Chace Crawford, I’ll admit I’ve watched this show more times than I count. And I can tell you, it gets better every single time. Start binging now. You’ll thank me later. XOXO.

Total Episodes: 121 (45 min each)

3. The Mindy Project – Hulu

This show changed my life. Okay, that might be a little dramatic, but so is Dr. Mindy Lahiri, portrayed by Mindy Kaling in this hilarious fashion-filled office rom com show that Hulu bought after it was (unreasonably) cancelled by Fox. This show has everything I ever look for, and I can honestly say I have never related to a character more than I do to Mindy. She’s very different on this show than her character on The Office, which I like, and the other actors were all new faces for me, which was refreshing. The comedy is so fast paced, I seriously blew through five seasons of this show in I think about three weeks? I watched it constantly. I literally want to be Mindy’s best friend. Watch this one and then call me so we can chat about season five’s cliffhanger!!!! (Season six is coming out soon!)

Total Episodes: 107 (25 min each)

4. Black Mirror – Netflix

Shifting gears a little bit, I’m sure this is another one you’re not surprised to see, as it is extremely popular, or least it was a little bit ago when it was first put on Netflix in 2016. This sic-fi thriller is something I thought I would never like, but after watching a few episodes with my boyfriend and his brother, I found myself hooked! The way this show captures our society and its addiction to technology is honestly a little scary, but it’s so fun to watch. Now I haven’t even seen every episode, and you don’t need to watch them in order because each episode is different with different characters. There are only 13 episodes total, across three whole seasons, but the episodes are so long it doesn’t matter. Read the descriptions, pick a few that sound interesting, and get to getting! My personal favorite and first recommendation is 3×1, Nosedive!

Total Episodes: 13 (All different lengths but at LEAST 45 min. each)

5. Happy Endings – Hulu

When I finished The Mindy Project back in May, I was depressed. What the heck was I supposed to do with my life? I had literally devoured that show, and since it was five whole seasons, it was still a pretty big part of my life! Well, Hulu (which I was still kind of new to at the time) said “Hey Jordan! You just finished The Mindy Project. We think you’ll really like Happy Endings! Click here to watch it.” So I did. And I LOVED IT. Now, this one is only 3 seasons and if I watched TMP fast, I watched Happy Endings like there was no tomorrow. Seriously guys, I was so addicted that I was watching it on my lunch break at work! Seriously, obsessed. It’s one of your typical run-of-the-mill friend group shows, but as the actors themselves have said in interviews (yes, I was in that deep) they think their show is different bc of the characters. It’s a typical relatable PLOT, but the people are kind of out there. You find pieces of yourself in each character, but they are not “normal” people. I loved it. The show actually has one of the main actors from Mindy Project, and then it also has Coach from New Girl.  The rest of the people were new for me, but they were INCREDIBLE. Penny is fearlessly dramatic just like me, and Jane & Brad’s marriage had me dying of laughter every single episode. It’s also the perfect length for a “I’m about to go to back to school, end of summer” binge!

Total Episodes: 57 episodes (25 minutes each)

6. Schitt’s Creek – Netflix

Okay, if I was doing this list in order, this would probably be #1. I literally cannot rave about it enough. Let me paint you a picture. One night last month I was chatting with my boyfriend, Ryan. “Hey babe, what’re you up to?” He said, “I’m watching some show called Schitt’s Creek.” My reaction was exactly what you would imagine it to be. Lol. But the next night we got take out and wanted to watch TV while we ate, so he suggested we watch the pilot. We did, and I was HOOKED!!!! It is a HILARIOUS comedy show, originally  aired and made in Canada, about a super wealthy family who loses all of their money and has to live in a town they once purchased as a joke. I’m not kidding. That’s it. The parents are Eugene Levy & Catherine O’Hara and the kids are Dan Levy (Eugene’s son IRL) and Annie Murphy. They’re 28 and 32 years old and act as if they’re 15. I love it. I relate to each character in a certain way and every other line is one that makes you laugh-out-loud. Again it’s a super easy to watch and power through show. Ryan and I are already finished with seasons 1 & 2 and are currently watching season 3 illegally! Seriously give it a shot, if you like it, let me know!!

Total Episodes (on Netflix): 26 (25 min each)

7. Friends – Netflix

So no one told you life was gonna be this way… I don’t think I need to say much about this one. It’s a classic. If you haven’t seen it, then we’re probably not that close and your life is drastically missing something important. Go watch all 10 seasons right now and don’t come back to my blog until you have. *Clap clap clap*

Total Episodes: 236 (25 min each)

8. Law and Order SVU – Hulu

This show used to be my life. Spring semester of junior year I could not LIVE without SVU. Mariska Hargitay is my everything and watching her solve crimes is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. She’s the reason I minor in Criminal Justice and the reason I pay for Hulu. You cannot find this show illegally. I tried. Every time I did, the site would get shut down before I could finish a season. These shows are long people, and there are A LOT of them. But I made a dent. They’re so fun. It’s a comforting show almost, even though it’s scary and I sometimes had to use a nightlight at school after some really creepy episodes. If you’re into mystery/detectives/anything like that, watch a few of these episodes and then try to tell me you’re not hooked. Detective Stabler wouldn’t believe you and neither would I.

Total Episodes: 410 (45 min each)

9. Younger – Hulu

And the award for the fastest I’ve ever watched a show goes to…

I love this show. Probably more than any of the rest. Thank GOD I saw it on Hulu and decided to give it a chance. I fell in love after one episode and the rest is history. Now I currently watch it live AKA weekly (*shudder*) but it’s worth it. Sutton Foster and Hilary Duff? Can you say dream team!? And that Nico Tortorella? Dear Lord. Where has he been my whole life? The soundtrack is also incredible. I use Shazam at LEAST once per episode. Anyway. I think I watched all three seasons in a week and a half? It’s summer, I literally have so much free time. If no one stops me, I WILL binge watch. And that’s what I did. You should too. Go watch Younger. Go watch Younger. Go watch Younger!!!!

Total Episodes: 39 (25 min each)

10. How I Met Your Mother – Netflix

If you didn’t watch this back in high school, we also probably aren’t friends, but I thought it was worth a mention since it’s super binge worthy to me! My boyfriend had never seen this when we first started dating and it’s one of my all time favorite shows so I made him watch all nine seasons with me. (and he did!) It was so fun to binge it together, it’s definitely a relationship-y show, but it also helped me through a break up so it’s perfect if you’re single to. I think it’s because it captures life and relationships so well, as well as the concepts of time, and of trusting fate. It’s perfect to me, and I will always love it, despite the HORRIFIC final episode. I just pretend it didn’t happen. Kind of like a lot in my life right now, haha! Josh Radnor and Jason Segel are the perfect pair of college best friends, and Neil Patrick Harris makes me laugh so hard I cry. Need I say more?

Total Episodes: 208 (25 min each)

I hope you guys enjoyed this list and that you find something new to obsess over before going back to school. If you seriously try one of my suggestions and like it, please let me know! I love hearing what y’all like/dislike, enjoy reading about, etc. It’s important to me! Thanks and Happy Watching!

XOXO copy
